If people are skiing, for example, you could send them information on their nearest ski resorts, or on their exact position on the slopes. If they’re shopping, you can tell them about special offers on the precise floor of the mall they’re on. Or you could send customers details of recommended restaurants or hotels close to where they happen to be at that time.

This clever piece of technology is extremely quick to set up and easy to administer. Essentially, you control what information you send out to your application, which is sitting on the user’s device.

You do this via a secure, online back office application (that uses Java J2EE technology) – and we can tailor the front and back office interfaces to include your graphics and your brand name.

One of our clients using Cronos <<Mobile Plan>>: the company Skiplan now has an iPhone application that acts as a CityGuide for ski resorts. Skiers who’ve subscribed to their application can access weather information, maps of ski-runs, performance stats, webcams and relevant news.

Using our vast know-how in mobile application technology, the Cronos Mobile Agency has developed an image recognition system that can be integrated into the latest mobile devices (the iPhone, Blackberry or Android). Using a bar code, the system fixes a user’s location, and then automatically generates reporting information from that place.

The right techniques

The ‘Push’ option sometimes comes as a default setting on the application when it’s downloaded, or users can choose to activate or deactivate it on the application settings page.

‘Push’ essentially means users can receive information, in real time, made available by the mobile community.

How it works

The Push system uses:

· a client server

· a server holding the database with the unique IDs of the applications to be used via ‘Push’

· an Apple Push server, which redirects the message from the client server to the iPhone

· a client iPhone

Essentially, each iPhone application has its own unique ID on AppStore.

These IDs are stored on a database, on a server.

When a message leaves the server, to go to users of a specific application, the client server sends the message to an Apple Push server, along with the relevant application ID.

The Apple server then redirects the message to the iPhones with this application on them.

· To exploit all the possibilities of the iPhone, by creating an interactive experience that ultimately encourages consumers to buy L’Oréal

Our response

To make L’Oréal’s application easy to navigate around, we used ‘touch’ functionality and an accelerometer (which detects movement and flips the screen from horizontal to vertical, and vice versa). We then came up with the following functions:

· Get the look : users can see pictures of the top L’Oréal models, and zoom in on part of their face to see what product they’re wearing

· Make up application videos : videos are available to download giving users beauty advice

· Your personalised diagnosis : users can answer questions about their skin and hair type, and then find out what products are best suited to them

This application, which is initially just for the UK market, complements the company’s website through a mobile device.
